Choosing Your Mulatar
Every Mulatar is handmade and can be customized to suit your musical needs and artistic vision. Because each instrument is built to order, prices can vary considerably depending on the model and the features selected.
I make three different kinds of Mulatar, using wood, bamboo, or aluminium for the body.
Classic Mulatar
The most sophisticated and labor-intensive version, offering the widest range of customization options and acoustic possibilities. This is generally the most expensive Mulatar.
Bamboo Mulatar
A lighter instrument with its own unique character and sound. The Bamboo Mulatar offers many customization possibilities while maintaining a distinctive organic aesthetic.
Aluminium Mulatar
The most affordable Mulatar model. Durable, lightweight, and highly versatile, it provides an excellent entry point into the world of the Mulatar.
Customization Options
Top Strings
All Mulatars include 3 to 5 top strings mounted above the instrument. These can be customized with several options:
Standard single strings
Double-string configurations for a richer sound
Jawari bridges for the characteristic buzzing resonance found in Indian instruments
Front Section
The front of the Mulatar can be configured in many different ways.
Available options may include:
Different numbers of strings
Full-key harp systems
Simpler harp layouts
Slide guitar
Fine tuners for greater tuning precision
Jawari bridge options for additional tonal character
Percussion Elements
The instrument can include a wide variety of percussive elements, such as:
Tabla and Nal heads
Other tunable and non-tunable skin heads
Wooden percussion surfaces
Various types of shakers
Electronics and Amplification
The Mulatar can be equipped with different pickup and amplification systems. Including:
Simple Output System
One output jack for the entire instrument
Individual volume controls for each sound source
Multi-Output System
Separate outputs for different sound sources
Greater flexibility for live performance and studio recording
Allows strings, percussion, and other elements to be amplified and processed independently
Pricing
Because every Mulatar is individually built and highly customizable, there is no fixed price list.
The final price depends on:
The Mulatar model
The number and type of strings
Front instrument configuration
Percussion elements
Electronics and pickup systems
Additional custom features
In general:
Aluminium Mulatar – the most affordable option £1000 - 2000
Bamboo Mulatar – mid-range pricing £2000 - 3000
